Quiet Santa Returns to University Place for the 2018 Holiday Season

  • After a Successful Debut in 2017, Quiet Santa will Return to Spend One-on-one Time with Children with Sensory Sensitivities
  • University Place Partnered with the Melisa Nellesen Center for Autism to Create this Experience for Children with Autism and Their Families

OREM, Utah (November 12, 2018) – University Place, a 120-acre mixed-use development project formerly known as University Mall, today announced that this holiday season it will once again be hosting a Quiet Santa experience designed specifically for children with sensory sensitivities. One in five Utah children have some degree of sensory sensitivity, and Quiet Santa makes it possible for them to spend one-on-one time with Santa without being overwhelmed by the typical crowds and noise.

Quiet Santa made his debut at University Place last year, and was so popular additional sessions had to be added. Due to this overwhelming interest, registration for the free event is required. Registration opens Thursday, November 15 at 12:00pm (noon) and can be completed online at www.universityplaceorem.com/events/quiet-santa-3/. Quiet Santa and will be available during the following dates and times:

  • Monday, November 26 – Friday, November 30
    8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.
    5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
  • Monday, December 3 – Friday, December 7
    8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.
    5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

“We want all of the families in our community to be able to join us for the fun holiday activities we have planned this season,” said Jeff Woodbury, senior vice president of development and acquisitions at Woodbury Corporation. “With Quiet Santa, families who might have been reluctant to expose their sensitive children to the hustle and bustle of the holidays can participate in a fun holiday tradition in a safe space.”

Quiet Santa will be set up in the east side of the shopping center near RC Willey, and will be thoughtfully decorated to account for sensory sensitivities by event sponsor Tai Pan Trading. Additionally, to ensure that the unique needs of attendees are considered, Quiet Santa has undergone specialized training by representatives at the Melisa Nellesen Center for Autism, who previously partnered with University Place to host the Autism Sports Camp earlier this year.

“Our entire community is improved when organizations like University Place lead out on developing and establishing substantial inclusive focused events for children and families in our area,” said Laurie Bowen, Associate Director at the Melisa Nellesen Center for Autism. “Santa is a symbol of childhood and generosity, we are thankful kids with exceptional needs get to have this experience in a way that works best for them.”

  • The Event is Free and Open to the Public, Featuring the Best of Brazilian Culture, Music, Art and Cuisine

(OREM, Utah) September 10, 2018 – University Place, a 120-acre mixed-use development project formerly known as University Mall, today announced that it will be hosting the 14th annual Utah Brazilian Festival on Saturday, September 15 from 1:00 p.m to 7:00 p.m.

For the first time, the festival will be held at The Orchard, University Place’s large and versatile outdoor community gathering space. Designed as a way to help the local community celebrate and share Brazilian heritage, this annual tradition is a family-friendly event that features entertainment, dancing and Brazilian cuisine.

“After years of holding the Utah Brazilian Festival in Salt Lake City, we’re excited to be setting up a new home at University Place,” said Matilde Wosnjuk, executive director of Viva Brazil. “By moving the venue to Utah County, we hope that people who haven’t experienced the festival yet will have a chance to join us and share in this cultural celebration.”

“The Utah Brazilian Festival is exactly the type of event we created The Orchard for, which is to provide the community here opportunities to gather and celebrate what’s most important to them” said Jeff Woodbury, senior vice president of development and acquisition at Woodbury Corporation. “And since Tucanos Brazilian Grill is one of the festival’s major sponsors – as well as one of our most popular restaurants – it is the perfect fit.”

Kicking off the festival at 1:00 p.m. will be the Samba Carnaval Parade. Directed by Caio Castro, an artistic producer from Atlanta, the parade will feature colorful costumes and drummers and dancers performing the original Brazilian Samba. Attendees will be invited to participate as well. Other activities include:

  • Pierre Onassis from Olodum, The Brazilian Roots and Brazucas Band – Performing on the main stage, these three musical groups will play Samba, Pagode, Forro and Brazilian rock music.
  • A Taste of Brazil – An array of delicious authentic cuisine will be available, including churrasco, feijoada, pao de queijo, coxinha, brigadeiros, sonhos and much more.
  • An arts exhibition – The work of local Brazilian artists will be on display.
  • Martial arts – There will be demonstrations of traditional Brazilian martial arts, including jiu-jitsu and capoeira.
  • Cantigas de Roda – As part of the Oral History Preservation Program sponsored by Utah Arts and Museums, this workshop will expose children and their families to traditional folklore songs, rhymes and games.
  • Kite making – This fun workshop will teach children how to make their own kite, and will include kite-flying demonstrations.

The Utah Brazilian Festival is presented by the Viva Brazil Cultural Center, a non-profit organization dedicated to educating the public about Brazilian arts, tradition, culture and language. Popular National Chain of Neighborhood Grocery Stores Opens at University Place

  • The Unique Store Features Renowned Private-Label Goods as Well as Everyday Basics
  • This is the First Store the Chain has Opened in Utah County, and the Third in Utah

OREM, Utah (July 27, 2018) – University Place, a 120-acre mixed-use development project

formerly known as University Mall, today announced that the newest addition to its unique walkable community has officially opened for business.

Trader Joe’s, a national chain of neighborhood grocery stores, has made its official debut in Utah County, and is only the third location to open in Utah. Known for its renowned private-label brand of great-tasting food and wines as well as other unique and hard-to-find products, Trader Joe’s has steadily grown in popularity across the nation. It currently has close to 500 stores across the United States.

In Utah County, interest in Trader Joe’s has been building for years. Back in 2015, many Utah County residents were asked to complete an online survey on the local state of retail. Seventy-four percent of the thousands of respondents that participated in the survey indicated they most wanted to see Trader Joe’s come to the area.

“Trader Joe’s is an outstanding company with high quality and one-of-a-kind products, said Richard Brunst, mayor of Orem. “Orem is honored to have a store open up at the University Place on July 27th. I am thankful to now have Trader Joe’s available for all Utah County residents right here in Orem.”

“The addition of Trader Joe’s further enhances the walkability and neighborhood feel of University Place,” said Jeff Woodbury, senior vice president of development and acquisition at Woodbury Corporation. “Now whether it’s the people who live here, work here, shop here or come for one of our many community events, they are just steps away from getting great quality food from one of the nation’s most popular grocers.”

The Trader Joe’s at University Place is located at 440 East Park Avenue (1150 South). The store is on State Street just north of University Parkway, right next to the new Wells Fargo branch, and at the former site of Big O Tires. Wells Fargo’s new address is now 456 East Park Avenue (1150 South). Big O Tires is now located at 620 East 800 South.

University Place Announces Inaugural Autism Sports Camp

  • Open to Children with Autism Between the Ages of 8 and 16, the Camp Will Feature Football, Basketball, Baseball and Soccer Sports Stations

OREM, Utah (July 25, 2018) – University Place, a 120-acre mixed-use development project formerly known as University Mall, today announced it will be holding its first-ever Autism Sports Camp on Saturday, July 28 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 pm.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disorder that affects communication and behavior. According to a 2016 study from the Utah Registry of Autism and Developmental Disabilities (URADD), about one in 48 boys and one in 156 girls who are eight years of age in Utah County have autism.

The free camp will be held at The Orchard, University Place’s large and versatile outdoor community gathering space, and is open to children aged 8 to 16 who are on the autism spectrum. There will be four different sports stations where participants can train and improve their skill sets in football, basketball, baseball and soccer. Snacks and water will be provided and there will be a quiet space set up on the side of the field for campers who need to take a break.

Sponsors for this event include the Melisa Nellesen Center for Autism, the Utah Special Olympics, Vivint Gives Back and the Orem Owlz.

“Many children with autism are not able to fully participate in team sports, which can leave some children and parents feeling isolated,” said Laurie Bowen, associate director of community outreach for the Melisa Nellesen Center for Autism at Utah Valley University. “A camp like this allows these families the opportunity to make new friends, learn some skills and just have an enjoyable experience.”

“This past winter we introduced Quiet Santa so kids in the community with sensory sensitivity could have the traditional Santa photo experience, and it was a great success,” said Jeff Woodbury, senior vice president of development and acquisition at Woodbury Corporation. “Similarly, with this sports camp we hope to give these kids an opportunity to participate in a summer camp environment that they otherwise might have missed out on.”

More information on the camp, including registration information, can be found at https://live-university-place-production.pantheonsite.io/events/.
