University Place Welcomes Special Olympics Utah Back for 2018 Summer Games Block Party

  • For the Second Year, The Orchard Will Kick Off the Special Olympics Utah Summer Games with a Block Party
  • Festivities Will Be Held on Friday, June 8 from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. and Include the Arrival of the Flame of Hope, the Lighting of the Cauldron, Award Presentations, Games, Music and More

OREM, Utah (June 5, 2018) – University Place, a 112-acre mixed-use development project

formerly known as University Mall, today announced that following the success of last year’s event, it will once again host the official community block party kicking off Special Olympics Utah’s 2018 Summer Games. The event will be held at The Orchard, University Place’s large outdoor and versatile gathering space, on Friday, June 8 from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m.

At 4:00 p.m. the party will begin, and at 6:20 p.m. the Flame of Hope will arrive, which will be carried by the athletes, as well as Orem city officials and representatives from local law enforcement agencies. A brief opening ceremony will follow, including the lighting of the cauldron, the Knights of Columbus Color Guard, and an awards presentation honoring excellence across several different areas. Both prior to and after the opening ceremony there will be games, music and the “Victory Dance.” The block party is a free event, and the public is invited to come share the joy and be a part of the celebration.

Special Olympics Utah uses the power of sports to help individuals with intellectual disabilities focus on what they “can do,” and in doing so be active and engaged in their communities. This year’s Summer Games will be held in three venues in Orem from June 8-9, with nearly 1,300 athletes and Unified Sports partners expected to compete.

“One of the cornerstones of Special Olympics Utah is creating inclusive communities, and University Place is the perfect location to do that,” said Wendy Kelly, director of community outreach and partnerships for Special Olympics Utah. “As we learned last year, The Orchard is a beautiful venue, and we’re really excited to be returning to it to kick off our 2018 Summers Games.”

“When we first conceived of The Orchard, we hoped to create a space where the community could come together and make lasting memories—which is exactly what this block party is all about,” said Randy Woodbury, president of Woodbury Corporation. “Last year’s event was an incredible experience, and I hope we have an even bigger turnout this year to celebrate the achievements of these wonderful athletes.”

University Place Expands Dining Options with Four New Locally-owned Restaurants

  • Ahi Muse, Itto Sushi, Tepanyaki Japanese Steakhouse and Teriyaki Stix will Provide Customers a Variety of Regional Asian Cuisine
  • Additionally, University Place is Building New Five-story Parking Structure

OREM, Utah (October 23, 2017) – University Place, a 120-acre mixed-use development project formerly known as University Mall, today announced that it is expanding its dining selections with four new locally-owned restaurants.

University Place is already home to the Seasons Food Court, and more than 25 food and beverage options, representing a mix of fast-casual and sit-down dining restaurants. The new additions include:

  • Ahi Muse – All-you-can-eat sushi and steak restaurant, including a variety of seafood including lobsters and crabs. Ahi Muse will host live entertainment and music daily, as well as monthly tuna shows. Ahi Muse is located in The Village along 800 East, and celebrated its grand opening earlier this month.
  • Itto Sushi – This sushi bar prides themselves in serving fresh, never frozen, fish delivered from San Francisco, and using premium Japanese rice cooked properly at a high heat for a short time. Itto Sushi is located on next to Macy’s just east of Midici The Neapolitan Pizza Company and right by the 545 University Place Office Building, and has an anticipated open date of late November.
  • Tepanyaki Japanese Steakhouse – Diners will be able to watch their meals being prepared right at their table at this hibachi-style restaurant. Tepanyaki Japanese Steakhouse will be located near the corner of University Parkway and 800 East, directly east of Starbuck, and is planned to open in November.
  • Teriyaki Stix – Opening the beginning of November, Teriyaki Stix is an alternative to fast food, offering salad and rice bowls using fresh ingredients. Stix is located in The Village, between the Cinemark movie theater and Deseret Book.

“What’s unique about all four of these new restaurants is that on top of serving delicious fare, they are all locally owned,” Randy Woodbury, president of Woodbury Corporation. “We take pride in being able to offer diners a wide variety of food options, and we’re glad to welcome these new additions to University Place.”

Other restaurants that have recently opened at University Place include Oh Mai, offering Vietnamese sandwiches; Swig n’ Sweets, which offers unique blended beverages and cookies; Midici The Neapolitan Pizza Company, offering up authentic Neapolitan style pizza’s.

Additionally, University Place is currently building a new five-story parking structure directly west of The Orchard, to provide added convenience to shoppers and diners. The structure will offer more than a thousand parking stalls, and will be built in two phases, with the first scheduled for completion in November, just in time for the holiday shopping season.

Daily Herald: Al’s Sporting Goods fills vacancy in University Place as it works to compete with big box retailers

There’s a new sporting goods store in town, but it’s one of the very few native to Utah.

Al’s Sporting Goods is holding its grand opening celebration Thursday through Saturday at its new location on the east side of University Place in Orem. The 40,000-square-foot sporting goods store took the place of the former Sports Authority that closed after the chain shut doors at more than 100 stores across the nation.

Kris Larsen, owner and CEO of Al’s, said Orem is a great place for the business’ second location. Al’s Sporting Goods was founded in Logan in 1921 by Alvin Moroni Larsen. Kris Larsen explained that his grandfather Al borrowed the $500 needed to start the store using only a $10 Mexican coin as collateral and a handshake. His shop, originally called Al’s Bike, sold bicycles and fishing gear, expanding over the years to include a full line of sporting goods.

“Al was a great guy. I still have people come into the Logan store and tell me ‘I knew your grandpa, and he was a great guy,’” Kris Larsen said.

Larsen is ecstatic when talking about his store and the new Orem location. He loves sporting goods — cycling, golfing and hunting being his favorite sports. . . .
