Daily Herald: University Place announces addition of Al’s Sporting Goods store

University Place announced its newest tenant Wednesday morning — a new sporting goods store.

Al’s Sporting Goods, a Logan-based company, will occupy the building where Sports Authority was formerly located. According to a Facebook post from the company, the store is expected to open in October.

“For years we have dreamed of opening a store in Utah County. We can’t think of a better place or people to share the Al’s story with,” said company CEO Kris Larsen.

“Our friends in Utah County will quickly learn that at Al’s, we are passionate about what we sell, insistent on customer care, and beyond belief when we promote!”

Al’s Sporting Goods was founded in Logan in 1921……

University Place Adds Locally-owned Al’s Sporting Goods to Evolving Shopping Center

  • University Place was Selected as the Ideal Site for the Retail Outlet’s Second Location
  • Al’s Sporting Goods is a Full-line Retail Sporting Goods Store, Carrying Products for All Seasons of Both Indoor and Outdoor Sports

OREM, Utah (April 19, 2017) – University Place today announced that Al’s Sporting Goods, a full-line sporting goods retailer with the longest operating history in the state of Utah, will be moving into 40,000 square feet of prime retail space, bringing 70 new jobs to the area.

For nearly a century, locally-owned Al’s Sporting Goods has been a mainstay in Logan, Utah, offering gear for every sport and every season, as well as an expansive collection of clothing and footwear. The store began in 1921 as a cycling shop, and over the past nearly 100 years has evolved into a premiere 60,000 square foot store featuring brands such as Nike, The North Face, Under Armour and more.

Al’s Sporting Goods is known throughout Cache Valley for its exceptional customer service, and its generous customer appreciation programs and sales. Al’s Sporting Goods has been open to adding a second store, exploring different sites across Utah and Idaho, but no site was ever a fit until touring University Place.

“We have always been interested in expanding into Utah County, because being a college town close to lots of different outdoor recreation, it is very similar to Logan,” said Kris Larsen, president and CEO of Al’s Sporting Goods. “Once we learned more about University Place and its focus on building a new kind of walkable community, we knew we had found our new home.”

“As a local, multi-generational, family-run business like Woodbury Corporation, we have a lot in common with Al’s Sporting Goods,” said Randy Woodbury, president of Woodbury Corporation. “Al’s has an inherent understanding of Utah’s mountains, climate and terrain, so they know exactly what products Utah sportsmen want and need.”

It is anticipated that the second location of Al’s Sporting Goods will be open by early fall. The new store will be located on the northeast side of University Place near the food court, between RC Willey and Costco.

Daily Herald: University Place announces next phase in buildout

Shovels will begin digging Wednesday on the next phase of projects at University Place in Orem.

According to Rob Kallas, mall manager, a new five-story parking structure will be built in two phases just west of the new Orchard Park and north of Macy’s department store.

“There will be 675 stalls in the first phase and 400 stalls in the second,” Kallas said.

The first phase is expected to open on Nov. 1 for the holiday shopping season. The second phase will begin in February 2018.

“We’re trying to bring more stalls closer to the mall,” Kallas said. “That opens up the parking lots for future office buildings.”

At least two more high-rise office buildings are scheduled for the University Place campus, part of its 10-year plan……

Daily Herald: Development continues to thrive in Orem

It doesn’t matter which of the four Interstate 15 exits you take into Orem, the minute you leave the freeway it’s apparent you are entering a city of growth and change.

Orem is a conglomeration of retail and office corridors with internal neighborhoods, parks, schools and churches. It has multiple recreation facilities, and is also a cultural arts and theater hub of Utah County.

Businesses want to come to the city, and according to Ryan Clark, manager of economic development, the requests are often hard to fill.

“The challenge is to find space for people right now,” Clark said. “Our inventory is reduced.”

While the inventory is reduced, with the naked eye it looks like the city still has some room to grow. That is exactly what Clark says it’s doing.

Perhaps the biggest center of growth and change, and the most noticeable, is University Place, formerly University Mall.

University Place is the pride and joy of the Woodbury Corporation’s 40-year commitment to Orem. That commitment spans not only the 125 acres along the University Parkway corridor, but throughout the city………

The CNU Awards are designed to recognize outstanding efforts that implement visionary planning, large and small developments, and tactical urbanism that enrich people’s lives and contribute to making the Wasatch Front a more walkable, bikeable and enjoyable place to live.

Sugar House Center is a mixed-use revitalization project that includes: Wilmington Plaza, an urban community space; Wilmington Flats, a modern apartment community; Legacy Village, an independent and assisted senior community; as well as assorted retail and office space, with more developments to come. Woodbury Corporation, along with project partners Dee’s Inc., Colmena Group, the Salt Lake City RDA, VCBO Architects, and Beecher Walker, received a CNU Honorable Mention for Urban Infill, which honors individual projects that demonstrate many strong and exemplary urban design elements.

University Place (formerly University Mall) is a 112-acre development that recently began a $500 million revitalization to add residential, office and green space to what has been Utah County’s premiere shopping destination for over 40 years. University Place was honored with a CNU Honorable Mention for Suburban Retrofit for converting a suburban style mall to a viable urban district and increasing the area’s overall quality of life. Woodbury Corporation shares the honor with project partners Ivory, the City of Orem, Nexus, KCB Architects, Woodbury Architects, and Studio Outside.

“We love that these CNU awards really value the positive impact design and development can have on communities,” said Lynn Woodbury, vice president of architecture at Woodbury Corporation. “That’s exactly what we strive to achieve with every one of our projects, and we are grateful that those efforts have been recognized.”

Woodbury Corporation and the other winners were awarded at a banquet on November 17 at Publik coffee Roasters in Salt Lake City.

Woodbury Corporation Wins ENR Award of Merit for University Place

Recognition Honors Woodbury Corporation and Partners for Demonstrating Excellence in Safety, Innovation, and Teamwork

SALT LAKE CITY (October 25, 2016) – Woodbury Corporation, a full-service real estate development and management company, today announced that it, along with its project partners Okland Construction and Architectural Nexus, have won a 2016 ENR Award of Merit for outstanding work on the 545 University Place office building at University Place in Orem, Utah.

The recognition is part of Engineering News-Record’s (ENR) annual Best Regional Projects Awards program, which is dedicated to honoring the best U.S.-based construction projects and the companies that design and build them. Independent juries of industry leaders in design and construction from each of ENR’s 10 regional editions judged the projects across 20 specialized categories using a set of criteria that included safety, construction quality, innovation and teamwork.

The 545 University Place office building was honored in the Mountain States region and in the Office/Retail/Mixed-use category. A true team effort, the award recognized the difficulty the team had in constructing an office building and underground parking structure in a very tight site while maintaining access to the surrounding operating shopping center tenants. Okland Construction was given credit for their construction quality, overcoming project challenges, teamwork, and for their safety record of 11,000 hours of work with no accidents. Finally, Architectural Nexus’ design was cited as an identifiable landmark with its unique use of materials and architectural composition, including a 30-degree bend in the building layout, two retail drive-thru lanes at the center of the building, and a 30’ high LED art screen facing the street.

“It is an honor to be recognized by an outside source, and we thank ENR for this wonderful award,” said Lynn Woodbury, vice president of architecture at Woodbury Corporation. “Projects of this magnitude are never easy, but they are made much easier when you have incredible partners like we had in the teams at Okland and Nexus. We are proud of what we’ve done so far, but there is still more to come at University Place.”

Woodbury Corporation and the other regional winners were awarded at a banquet on October 25 at the Salt Lake Marriott Downtown at City Creek.
