Daily Herald: Orem celebrates its growth from 1,600 people 100 years ago to today with birthday party

(Daily Herald) —  Orem celebrates its growth from 1,600 people 100 years ago to today with birthday party

One hundred years ago, there were only 1,600 people living alongside the rattlesnakes and sagebrush in Orem.

The barren area was known as the Provo Bench, and although settlers wanted to grow crops and fruit trees, there was no water available.

In order to pass a water bond for $119,000, the city of Orem was formed and a canal was built to bring water from the Provo River.

“When they did that, this area began to develop,” said Mayor Richard Brunst. “This is a wonderful opportunity to build on what the pioneers have done. This area has turned into a beautiful spot.”

This event commemorates the anniversary of the official incorporation of the City of Orem, but city officials have planned centennial events throughout the year. As part of these ongoing celebrations, the city has created a collector set of five pins, one of which will be available at the party.

“Not only do University Place’s roots run deep in this community, but Woodbury Corporation also happens to be celebrating its 100-year anniversary this year, so we think it’s pretty fitting that we get to host this wonderful event,” said Randy Woodbury, president of Woodbury Corporation.

“I couldn’t be more excited to celebrate the start of this great city 100 years ago,” said Orem Mayor Richard Brunst. “What started as a means to pass a bond to pay for a new water canal 100 years ago for approximately 2,300 residents has now grown to Utah’s fifth largest city with close to 100,000 residents. Congratulations to all of the former and current residents of the great city of Orem and thank you for 100 wonderful years!”

The Advisor: Mix and Match – traditional malls are out mixed-use developments are in

Here’s how to turn old investments into new ones.

By Kelsie Foreman

If you’ve found yourself perusing the shops at a retail mall looking for a new pair of shoes or jeans, you’ve probably noticed that your shopping center is looking a little emptier these days. Due to the rise of ecommerce and Amazon, an increasing number of consumers choose to buy their goods online, rather than in-store, leaving the traditional shopping mall looking for new ways to innovate.

Daily Herald: Quiet Santa helps families through hustle bustle of Christmas

With few words, but perhaps the lyrics to Jingle Bells, the Quiet Santa at University Place reaches out to all ages with sensory sensitivities to give them their moment of time with the jolly elf.

On Thursday, Marie Wiscombe and her daughter Lydia, 19, had their 15 minutes with Santa.

Lydia lives with CDKL5, a disorder that has symptoms similar to Rett Syndrome, including seizures, loss of language skills, hand wringing and developmental problems. The disorder is most often found in females beginning in infancy.

ABC4 Utah: ‘Quiet Santa’ provides calm experience for kids with special needs on Christmas

OREM (ABC4 News) – For a lot of kids, going to see Santa is one of the most exciting parts of Christmas. But for kids with autism, or sensory issues, the experience can be scary.

For the Shields family, the experience of seeing Santa wasn’t always a happy one.

Parent Chantyl Shields says the lights, music, and crowds can be stressful for her kids, who both have sensory sensitivities. However, last year, that all changed because of an experience called ‘Quiet Santa.’

Deseret News: ‘You just have to experience it to know how it feels:’ The stories of 3 live Nativity scenes across Utah

SALT LAKE CITY — Sixteen years ago, Esty Larsen’s grandma Irene Hayes was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and was told she only had three months to live.

After her passing a year later, Esty Larsen and her mother, Alison Larsen, started brainstorming ways they could honor their late grandmother and mother. They thought about running a 5K in her name or having a bake sale, but that didn’t seem like enough.

“(One night, my mom) had a dream that (we) put on a play about the Nativity, about Christ’s birth. So the next morning, we started talking about it and decided to put on a live Nativity in a local barn,” Esty Larsen told the Deseret News.

Daily Herald: Quiet Santa returns to University Place

After an overwhelming response last year to the first-ever Quiet Santa at University Place, the shopping center has upped its game this year with more time slots and a larger area for children to meet and interact with Santa Claus.

The Quiet Santa experience is designed specifically for children with sensory sensitivities. One in 54 Utah children are diagnosed with autism, and Quiet Santa makes it possible for them to spend one-on-one time with Santa without being overwhelmed by the typical crowds and noise, a University Place statement said.
