- University Place was Selected as the Ideal Site for the Retail Outlet’s Second Location
- Al’s Sporting Goods is a Full-line Retail Sporting Goods Store, Carrying Products for All Seasons of Both Indoor and Outdoor Sports
OREM, Utah (April 19, 2017) – University Place today announced that Al’s Sporting Goods, a full-line sporting goods retailer with the longest operating history in the state of Utah, will be moving into 40,000 square feet of prime retail space, bringing 70 new jobs to the area.
For nearly a century, locally-owned Al’s Sporting Goods has been a mainstay in Logan, Utah, offering gear for every sport and every season, as well as an expansive collection of clothing and footwear. The store began in 1921 as a cycling shop, and over the past nearly 100 years has evolved into a premiere 60,000 square foot store featuring brands such as Nike, The North Face, Under Armour and more.
Al’s Sporting Goods is known throughout Cache Valley for its exceptional customer service, and its generous customer appreciation programs and sales. Al’s Sporting Goods has been open to adding a second store, exploring different sites across Utah and Idaho, but no site was ever a fit until touring University Place.
“We have always been interested in expanding into Utah County, because being a college town close to lots of different outdoor recreation, it is very similar to Logan,” said Kris Larsen, president and CEO of Al’s Sporting Goods. “Once we learned more about University Place and its focus on building a new kind of walkable community, we knew we had found our new home.”
“As a local, multi-generational, family-run business like Woodbury Corporation, we have a lot in common with Al’s Sporting Goods,” said Randy Woodbury, president of Woodbury Corporation. “Al’s has an inherent understanding of Utah’s mountains, climate and terrain, so they know exactly what products Utah sportsmen want and need.”
It is anticipated that the second location of Al’s Sporting Goods will be open by early fall. The new store will be located on the northeast side of University Place near the food court, between RC Willey and Costco.
About University Place
Originally developed in the early 1970s in Orem, Utah, University Place (formerly University Mall) is a 120-acre mixed-use redevelopment project that initially only included retail. Having completed the initial phases of a $500 million revitalization program, University Place is now home to upscale apartments, Class-A office space, an indoor and outdoor kid’s play area, and green space called The Orchard, that features a choreographed show fountain and is programmed year-round with events for the community. University Place was first developed and is still owned and operated by Woodbury Corporation, a 4th generation family-run business, and one of the oldest and most respected full-service real estate development and management companies in the Intermountain West.
